what questions should a defense attorney in a criminal trial?

For my law class I was assigned to a criminal case on aggrevated assault and I am playing the role of a defense attorney and I do not know what questions to ask to the defendant?

It depends upon facts of the case. Is there an alibi – I was not there, it was not me? Or, I did strike the complaining witness but he hit me or threatened me first.
Or, the car I was driving was out-of-control, a Toyota, I could not avoid hitting the complaining witness.
